What Can Righteous People Do in Turbulent Times?

In an era of moral and cultural upheaval, many Christians may feel disheartened and question how they can truly make a difference in our society.

This sense of uncertainty is not new; even King David faced similar doubts, asking in Psalm 11:3, “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

Indeed, in the United States, we see foundational values under threat, and the moral fabric of our nation appears to be fraying. So, what can we do? Thankfully, the Bible offers guidance. Here are eight ways believers in America can actively make a difference for Christ.

Stand Firm on Truth
We must anchor ourselves in the unchanging Word of God. With so many ideologies challenging biblical truths, our first responsibility is to uphold what is true. Psalm 119:160 states, “Thy word is true from the beginning.” Being students of Scripture equips us to navigate the complexities of our times without being swayed by cultural trends.

Pray for Spiritual Revival
While electing righteous leaders is important, the spiritual needs of our nation extend beyond political solutions. We need God to bring a revival akin to the Great Awakenings that transformed our country. Let us earnestly pray for renewal in our lives, our churches, and our communities. Prayer is the foundation upon which any lasting change must be built.

Proclaim the Gospel
In the midst of chaos, the message of Jesus Christ remains our most potent tool. As Paul states in Romans 1:16, “I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation.” Now is the time for Christians to boldly share the Gospel, illustrating how a relationship with God can transform lives.

Commit to Your Local Church
The local church is essential for reaching the world and nurturing believers. Despite recent challenges, it remains a pillar of truth (1 Timothy 3:15). By engaging actively in a local church, we find support, encouragement, and opportunities to serve together, multiplying our impact in our communities.

Count the Cost
Jesus warned us to consider the cost of discipleship (Luke 14:28-33). Following Christ may involve sacrifice, whether through facing persecution or simply prioritizing our faith over comfort. We must be ready to embrace whatever challenges come our way.

Live with Integrity
Our actions should reflect our beliefs consistently. Colossians 3:17 urges us to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus. When our lives exemplify Christ's teachings, we become powerful witnesses of the Gospel's impact.

Invest in the Next Generation
Teaching young people the truths of Scripture and mentoring them in applying these truths is crucial for the future. Proverbs 22:6 encourages us to train children in the right way. Investing time and effort in their spiritual education equips them to face the challenges of a secular world.

Engage as Active Citizens
While our primary allegiance is to Christ, we also have a responsibility as citizens. We should vote thoughtfully and support leaders and policies that reflect biblical values. Christians can also engage in their communities through local governance, embodying Christ's love and truth in public spaces.

So, what can the righteous do? The answer lies in trusting the Lord, as David declared in Psalm 11:1. While we must engage actively in our world, our ultimate hope is not in political movements or human institutions but in God alone. As Psalm 118:8 reminds us, “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.” By placing our faith in God, we can navigate these turbulent times with hope and purpose.
