Parents' Creative Strategies to Make Back-to-School Season 'Magical'

A recent poll reveals that 80% of parents are striving to create a “magical” back-to-school experience for their elementary-aged children.

According to the survey, which interviewed 2,000 parents with kids aged 12 and under, 86% are focused on rekindling excitement about returning to the classroom.

To achieve this, many parents are taking several thoughtful steps: 62% are letting their children select their own clothes and outfits, another 62% are buying school supplies based on their child’s preferences, and 56% are supporting their child's hobbies and interests.

Interestingly, 19% of parents admitted they disliked school when they were young, and a staggering 96% hope to foster more positive experiences for their own children. The survey also found that 40% of children are typically “very excited” to return to school after summer vacation, prompting parents to work hard to meet these high expectations.

To boost their child’s enthusiasm for learning, 63% of parents use hands-on methods like baking to teach concepts such as fractions. Additionally, 43% incorporate food-related activities, and 25% engage in imaginative play, such as fantasy costume dressing, to make learning fun.

Conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Keebler snacks, the survey also explored various ways parents add a touch of magic to their kids' school year. Over 40% of parents like to surprise their children with their favorite snacks, 30% include notes in their lunchboxes, and 19% provide a “lucky charm” for good luck. Moreover, 70% of parents see after-school snacks as a way to help their child recover from a tough day.

The survey highlights that parents often keep the magic alive by encouraging their children’s imagination (70%), fostering a belief in figures like the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, or Santa Claus (53%), teaching them to see the best in people and experiences (50%), and promoting a sense of curiosity and adventure (46%).

“There are many small ways to make a new school routine special and instill a love of learning in your child,” says Alicia Mosley, Vice President of Marketing for the Keebler Brand. “Whether it's through lunchbox notes or their favorite snacks, these little moments of magic are what children will remember and cherish.”

It’s heartening to see parents putting in the effort to keep the magic alive, ensuring their children have positive and memorable school experiences.
