Missouri Churches Celebrate Christmas with Over 600 Global Nativity Displays

Two Missouri congregations are spreading the Christmas spirit by showcasing hundreds of unique Nativity scenes from around the world at their annual events.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cape Girardeau will host its “Nativities From Around the World” event from Dec. 5-7, featuring more than 600 Nativity displays. Peggy Mouser, co-chair of the event, explained that the goal is to share the true meaning of Christmas with the community.

“We hope visitors leave with a stronger Christian Christmas spirit, rather than the commercialism that often dominates the season,” said Mouser. “From the moment people walk in, they feel the Spirit of Christmas. Each Nativity scene radiates peace and joy, offering a meaningful way to celebrate Christ’s birth.

A Decade-Long Tradition

The Cape Girardeau congregation has hosted this event for about 10 years, though it faced interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a devastating arson attack in 2021. This year’s showcase will feature live and pre-recorded music from local musicians and choirs, as well as a popular photo booth introduced last year.

With an ever-growing collection of Nativity sets, the church has expanded the display area to accommodate the sheer number of scenes. “It’s magical to see these varied sets displayed together, each reflecting the artist’s unique perspective and cultural heritage,” said Mouser.

Farmington Church Joins the Celebration

In addition to Cape Girardeau, the LDS congregation in Farmington, Missouri, will hold a similar event in December. Denise Wright, chair of the Farmington event, shared that last year’s showcase featured 125 Nativity scenes, some borrowed from the Cape Girardeau church.

“Our hope is that this celebration of Christ’s birth reminds people of the many Christians worldwide who worship Him,” said Wright. “It’s also an opportunity to unite as brothers and sisters in Christ, sharing these meaningful displays with one another.”

Both events invite attendees to reflect on the spiritual significance of Christmas through art, music, and fellowship, offering a heartfelt alternative to the season’s commercial focus.
