A suspect is in custody after an explosion, caused by an improvised explosive device (IED), rocked a courthouse in Santa Maria, California, on Wednesday morning, according to authorities.
The blast, which occurred around 8:45 a.m., injured six people, according to a spokesperson for Marian Regional Medical Center. Three of the victims are in fair condition, two are in good condition, and the condition of the sixth person remains unknown.
Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Raquel Zick confirmed that the explosion was the result of an intentionally set IED. Deputies responded swiftly, arresting a man shortly after arriving at the scene.
The courthouse area, located in Santa Maria—about 150 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles—was immediately cordoned off by authorities. Deputies focused their investigation on a parked car linked to the suspect.
"The investigation is progressing slowly, but detectives do not believe there are any additional suspects. The bomb squad is processing the scene, and the suspect is still being interviewed," Zick said.
