Chip and Joanna Gaines Stand by Decision to Delay Social Media for Their Children Until Age 18

Chip and Joanna Gaines recently opened up about their family rule regarding social media for their kids, emphasizing that they allow their children to join social platforms only the summer before they head off to college.

In an interview with Jenna, Joanna explained, "Our house rule is you get social media the summer before you go to college." Chip chimed in, acknowledging that their children have expressed a desire for social media earlier, even as young as 12 or 13 years old, but they understand and respect the family's policy.

The couple acknowledged that navigating this rule can be challenging, especially when their children see their friends using social media. Joanna highlighted, "We can tell them they have other wonderful things in life. Our lifestyle is a bit unique."

They emphasized the importance of waiting, asserting that focusing on real-life experiences rather than constantly being online contributes to a more fulfilling childhood. Chip pointed out the benefits of delaying social media use for kids, questioning, "What benefits have we personally experienced?" They acknowledged that while social media has its advantages for adults, they believe it's better for children to wait.

The Gaines’s recognize that deciding when to introduce social media to children is a difficult parenting choice. They advised parents to consider what works best for their family, whether that means establishing specific rules or setting limits on social media access.

With five children ranging from age 5 to 19, the Gaines’s are returning to television with "Fixer Upper: The Lake House," celebrating the show's 10th anniversary. The new series will follow them as they renovate a mid-century modern lake house near Lake Waco.

Proverbs 6:20 is a verse that resonates with their parenting philosophy: "My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of your mother."
